At the start of 2020, a deadly virus was discovered in Wuhan, China. The Chinese government deemed the virus so dangerous that they decided to lock down several cities.

As of this writing, more than 4016 have succumbed to Novel Corona (CoVid-19) virus, 113754 are infected globally, and 500 million people are affected by the city lockdowns.

For the Philippines, there are currently 24 confirmed cases and we still don’t know the extent of how far the virus have already spread. It is always good to take precautions because right now there is no cure or vaccine for the CoVid-19 virus.

The following instructions are more applicable to employers because they are more in control of the policies in the workplace. But employees will still find them useful.

How to Protect Employees from Novel CoronaVirus (CoVid-19)

Separate Sick Employees

An employee who has a fever of around 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater should be advised to stay home. They can use their leaves or the company can make temporary work at home arrangement.

If the employee suspects themself to have CoVid-19, the employee should immediately report to the local health authority so they can be given proper medical attention.

An employee who arrives to work sick should be sent home. If they appear to have
acute respiratory symptoms, they should be given assistance to go to the local health authority so that they can be given proper medical treatment.

Practice Proper Hygiene in the Office

The virus is said to be transferred through close human contact. Practice cleanliness.
Wash your hands with soap and water regularly. At least 20 seconds of washing is advised.

Cover your entire nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use disposable tissue paper. Incase there is none around, use your bent elbow. Don’t use your hands because you use it to touch many things like shaking hands, door knobs, office equipment and the like.

In extreme cases, avoid touching your face because the virus can be transferred through your eyes, nose and mouth. Take a bath when you get home.

Perform Routine Cleaning in the Office

Regularly clean the office. Wipe frequently touched surfaces with disinfectants. Examples of these are desks, chairs, keyboards, remote controls, and doorknobs.

What are the symptoms of CoVid-19 / Novel CoronaVirus?

Fever, Coughing, Sore Throat, Shortness of Breath or Difficulty Breathing are the symptoms of CoVid-19.. However, some people may display none of the symptoms but could still be carriers.

How is CoVid-19 / Novel CoronaVirus Transmitted?

The virus is transmitted mainly through person to person contact. It can also possibly be transferred through contact with infected objects.

Lifespan of Viruses outside the Body

How long does CoVid-19 live outside the body after an infected person coughs or sneezes? The lifespan of CoVid-19 outside the body has not yet been published. But we can look at the lifespan of Cold and Flu viruses to get an idea.

Cold viruses can survive indoors for 7 days. Meanwhile, Flu viruses can survive for 24 hours.

Viruses live longer on hard surfaces like metals and plastics than on soft surfaces like fabrics.

Flu viruses can live on tissues for 15 minutes.
